Best Substack Tools in 2026, by Job (Sourced)

By the newsletterapi team · Published · Updated · 6 min read

The problem: “There are dozens of Substack tools and I can't tell which ones are safe, which are official and which are worth paying for.”

Cover image: Best Substack Tools in 2026, by Job (Sourced)

Short answer

The best Substack tool depends on the job. As of October 2026: Buffer or Typefully for scheduling Notes (both official partners, free to start), Narrareach for cross-posting to LinkedIn and Medium, StackStats for offline analytics of your exports, Supascribe for custom signup embeds, Reletter for sponsorships, and Substack's official MCP or newsletterapi for AI agents. Start with Substack's free features.

Disclosure: newsletterapi is an independent project for Substack writers and appears in this list because it does some of these jobs. We aren't affiliated with Substack or any vendor here, and there are no affiliate links. Every price and feature below was read on the vendor's own site on October 24, 2026, and is linked where it appears. We don't rank tools against each other: the right one depends on the job, so the list is grouped by job, and the order within each group has no meaning.

The problem

Substack tools have changed fast. A year ago, scheduling Notes from outside Substack meant fragile workarounds:

"Users should note that for the scheduled post to be posted when scheduled, an instance of chrome needs to be running on the computer that was used to set the schedule." (Chrome Web Store review, 2025-08-23)

"While this is one of our most popular requests, it's currently blocked by API limitation." (@buffer, X, 2026-01-18)

Since then Substack has added native Notes scheduling, Buffer and Typefully partnerships, an official MCP server for Bestseller publications, and AI detection. Some older tools are now redundant, and some writers say the tool was never the hard part:

"Scheduling was never my bottleneck." (GenAI Unplugged comments, 2026-07-14)

So start with what Substack gives you for free, then add a tool only for a job it doesn't cover.

What does Substack already do for free?

Before paying for anything, check these built-in features (all from Substack's help centre, October 2026):

  • Schedule Notes on web or in the app (Substack Help).
  • Embed a signup form on any site that supports iFrames, except Medium; it "is not customizable" (Substack Help).
  • Embed posts and Notes on other websites (Substack Help).
  • Connect Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, the Meta pixel, the X pixel and Parse.ly under Settings → Analytics (Substack Help).
  • Export "your posts, subscriber list, and related statistics" as a zip (Substack Help).
  • Connect an AI assistant through the official MCP server, if you're an admin of a Bestseller publication; access is read-only (Substack Help).

Best tools for scheduling Substack Notes

Tool How it reaches Substack Price (Oct 24, 2026) Also does
Buffer Official authorization on Substack; Notes only, top-level, plain text (Buffer Help) Free: 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel, API with 3,000 requests a month; Essentials $5 and Team $10 per channel per month (pricing) LinkedIn, X and more; API and MCP
Typefully Partner integration; Notes "Available for free to all users" (changelog) Notes free; paid plans on its site X, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky; official Claude connector since Sept 18, 2026 (same changelog)
WriteStack Its homepage says the "browser extension publishes to Substack" after you click Sync (WriteStack) Hobbyist $23.99/mo or $19.99/mo billed yearly; Standard $32.99 or $24.99; Enterprise $99.99 or $79.99 Note analytics, auto-DMs and Claude MCP from Standard
StackBuddy "A free Chrome extension syncs your scheduled notes into Substack's own scheduler" (StackBuddy) Free: 30 scheduled notes a month; Pro $12.50/mo billed yearly or $15 monthly AI drafting, creator network, LinkedIn cross-post on Pro, MCP

If Notes are your only channel, Substack's native scheduler is enough. If you plan Notes next to LinkedIn or X, Buffer and Typefully are the official routes. WriteStack and StackBuddy add Notes-specific analytics and AI drafting. More in Substack Notes.

Best tools for cross-posting to LinkedIn, Medium and X

  • Narrareach schedules Substack Notes and articles plus Medium, LinkedIn posts, LinkedIn Articles and newsletters, WordPress and Ghost from one calendar. Audience Builder is $19.99/mo ($199/yr), Revenue Writer $39/mo adds X, Threads and other social networks, and Full Agentic Mode $89/mo adds a REST API and webhooks (Narrareach). Its pricing page doesn't say how it connects to Substack, so ask before you sign up.
  • IFTTT has two Substack triggers, new post and new note, polled hourly on Free and every 5 minutes on Pro, and ready-made applets for LinkedIn, X, Discord and Google Sheets (IFTTT).
  • Buffer and Typefully (above) handle the LinkedIn and X side.

Our step-by-step guide, with a tested LinkedIn API script, is cross-posting Substack to LinkedIn.

Best tools for Substack analytics

  • StackStats is a desktop app for Mac and Windows that analyses the CSV exports from Settings → Exports on your own computer: churn risk, cohorts, growth sources and best posting times. It costs $39 for a 1-year licence or $79 lifetime (an early-adopter price) (StackStats). It says it is independent and not affiliated with Substack.
  • Google Analytics 4 and Tag Manager are free and plug into Substack's Analytics settings (linked above).
  • newsletterapi Analytics reads the exports you upload and returns growth, cohorts and segments as JSON or CSV for Sheets or a database (Analytics API). Pair it with a Google Sheets dashboard.

For what each built-in metric means, see Substack analytics explained.

Best tools for signup forms, embeds and paid extras

  • Supascribe offers customisable subscribe forms, newsfeed and popup embeds, and landing pages that feed Substack. Free covers 2 basic embeds and your first 100 new subscribers; Starter is $9/mo and Growth $20/mo billed yearly (Growth adds Zapier and a custom domain); Pro is $249/mo (Supascribe).
  • Sidestack sells digital products through the Stripe account you connected to Substack (free), and links paying subscribers to a Discord server on its $39/mo Business plan (Sidestack).
  • newsletterapi Embeds serves your latest posts as CORS-friendly JSON and widgets for your own site (Embeds).

Substack's own signup embed is free and enough for most sites; see embedding Substack on your website.

Best tools for sponsorship research

Reletter is a newsletter search engine with contacts and exports, aimed at sponsors and PR. Plans are $49, $99 and $199 a month, and an API add-on is $59/mo for 5,000 requests (Reletter). It's built for people buying placements, not for running your own publication.

Best tools for backups and migration

Substack's export is the foundation and it's free. What it lacks is a schedule and an off-site copy. The newsletterapi Backups API picks up each new post from your RSS feed and writes Markdown and HTML with images to GitHub, Google Drive, Dropbox or S3, and stores the exports you upload on a reminder. Notes aren't covered. Our Substack backup guide shows the manual routine too.

Best tools for APIs, MCP and AI agents

Tool What an agent or script can do Access
Substack MCP (official) Read dashboard metrics, traffic and settings; "cannot publish posts, send Notes, or modify your account" (Substack Help) Admins of Bestseller publications
Substack Publisher API Read-only, per-publication key where enabled See our Publisher API guide
Buffer API and MCP Schedule Notes and posts on other channels 1 API key and 3,000 requests a month on Free (pricing)
WriteStack MCP Draft, tag and queue Notes; you still click Sync (WriteStack) Standard plan and above
Narrareach MCP and API MCP on all plans; REST API and webhooks on $89/mo (Narrareach) Paid plans
newsletterapi Posts API and MCP Read your archive as JSON or Markdown, search it, learn your style and suggest internal links; draft-only Free tier; Writer $9, Pro $29, Agency $79 a month (pricing)

newsletterapi reads your public RSS feed and the exports you upload. It never asks for your Substack login and doesn't publish. Details: MCP server, Posts API, and the Substack API guide. For other servers, see newsletter MCP servers compared.

Which tools did we leave out, and why?

  • Tools that log in as you from their servers. Some services hold your Substack session cookie or run a signed-in cloud browser so they can post or add subscribers. We don't list them: it gives a third party full control of your account, and our scraper guide explains the terms-of-service risk.
  • Zapier. There's no Substack app: the Zapier Substack page returned 404 on October 24, 2026 (Zapier). Use your RSS feed as the trigger instead; see Substack integrations.
  • Tools we couldn't verify today. If a vendor's pricing didn't render or didn't mention Substack, we left it out rather than guess.

Know a tool we missed, or spot a price that changed? Email hello@newsletterapi.io and we'll check it against the vendor's page.

Questions people ask

What is the best free Substack tool?
Substack's own features come first: native Notes scheduling, the signup embed, post embeds, the Analytics settings for Google Analytics and the Meta pixel, and Settings → Exports. Of the third-party tools, Buffer's free plan and Typefully's free Notes scheduling are official Substack partners.
Are Substack Chrome extensions safe?
Read how each one connects. Some, like StackBuddy, say their extension syncs Notes into Substack's own scheduler, so Substack publishes them. Avoid any tool that asks for your Substack password or a session cookie to run on its own servers.
Which Substack tools have an API or MCP?
As of October 2026: Substack's official MCP (Bestseller admins, read-only), Buffer's API and MCP, Typefully's MCP, WriteStack's MCP on Standard and above, Narrareach's MCP on all plans with a REST API on its top plan, Reletter's API add-on, and the newsletterapi Posts API and MCP.
Does Substack integrate with Zapier?
No. Zapier's Substack app page returned 404 when we checked on October 24, 2026. Use the RSS feed as a trigger instead, or IFTTT, which has two Substack triggers.
Is newsletterapi neutral in this list?
No, and we say so. newsletterapi is our product. We list it only for the jobs it does and give the other tools' facts from their own pages.
