Substack Integrations in 2026: What Works and What Doesn't
By the newsletterapi team · Published · Updated · 7 min read
The problem: “Substack doesn't integrate with Zapier, Make or my CRM, so I can't automate anything around my newsletter.”
Short answer
As of October 2026, Substack has no app on Zapier, Make, n8n or Pipedream, and no webhooks. What does work: the public RSS feed, two read-only IFTTT triggers, Notes scheduling through Buffer or Typefully, GA4, Google Tag Manager and Meta or X pixels in Settings, and the export you download yourself.
The problem
"The big issue is that Substack doesn’t integrate with anything, which makes things complicated." (r/Substack, March 2025)
"No API, no webhooks, no Zapier integration, no SSO" (Brad Hargreaves on LinkedIn, explaining why his publication left Substack)
This is one of the oldest complaints about Substack. We hand-coded 111 public forum, review and GitHub sources. Among them, 23 asked how to get subscribers into Substack from other tools, and 19 asked how to sync subscribers out. The thread runs from a 2020 Zapier Community question to a Make community thread with 1,050 views to Reddit posts from 2026.
The fix is knowing which routes are real. Most "Substack integrations" lists mix three things: official connections, read-only feeds and grey-area browser bots. This page sorts them. Everything below was checked on 21 October 2026, and we say how. Substack changes quickly, so treat this as a dated snapshot.
Is there a Substack app on Zapier, Make or n8n?
No. We requested each platform's Substack directory page on 2026-10-21:
| Platform | URL checked | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Zapier | zapier.com/apps/substack/integrations | 404, no app |
| n8n | n8n.io/integrations/substack | 404, no official node |
| Pipedream | pipedream.com/apps/substack | 404, no app |
| Make | make.com/en/integrations/substack | Blocked by a Cloudflare check (403), so not confirmed either way |
| IFTTT | ifttt.com/substack | Live: 2 triggers, 0 actions |
The reason is structural. Zapier's publishing rules require the builder to own the API, or to have permission to use it. Substack has no public write API to build on. A Zapier staff member said as much back in 2020: "It doesn't look like this app has an API, which is a requirement in order to build a Zapier integration - sorry about that." (Zapier Community). Six years on, operators still run into it: "SubStack has no API available that I can automate sending leads to via Zapier or Make." (r/Substack, January 2026).
n8n has a community node, but it signs in with your session cookie. In the n8n forum thread, several users report 403 errors when creating Notes, and one wrote: "I have not yet, gave up so vibe-coded my Chrome Extension."
What does connect to Substack officially?
These are the routes Substack documents or has announced itself:
| Integration | What it does | Direction | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|---|
RSS feed (/feed) |
Lists your recent public posts | Out | Everyone (help) |
| Google Analytics 4 | Page views, signups, paid subscriptions | Out (anonymous) | Everyone (help) |
| Google Tag Manager | Loads a GTM container on your pages | Out (anonymous) | Everyone (same article) |
| Meta pixel, X pixel | Ad conversion tracking, with optional signup and paid event IDs for X | Out (anonymous) | Everyone (same article) |
| Parse.ly | Content analytics | Out | Everyone (same article) |
| Buffer | Schedule and publish Notes, including through Buffer's API and MCP | In (Notes only) | All Buffer plans (Buffer help) |
| Typefully | Schedule Notes alongside X and LinkedIn | In (Notes only) | Typefully users (changelog) |
| Official MCP server | Read-only dashboard metrics for AI assistants | Out | Bestseller publication admins (help) |
| Exports | Zip of posts, subscriber list and statistics | Out (manual) | Everyone (help) |
| Stripe | Payments for paid subscriptions | Payments | Paid publications |
Substack announced the Buffer connection itself on X on 2026-09-23, and its changelog calls Typefully a "partnership". Neither is an open developer programme: as of October 2026 there is no public page where other tools can apply for the same access.
How do RSS-based automations work?
Every publication has a feed at yourpub.substack.com/feed, according to Substack's help centre. Zapier, Make, n8n and IFTTT all have generic "new item in feed" triggers, so any of them can react when you publish. Common recipes:
- New post → message in a Slack or Discord channel.
- New post → a draft LinkedIn or X post linking back to it.
- New post → a row in Google Sheets or Airtable, for an editorial log.
- New post → a card on your own website (see embedding Substack posts).
The limits: RSS is one-way and post-only. It carries no subscriber data and no stats, and it can't create anything on Substack. Poll it gently. One n8n user hit 403 errors when polling a Substack feed, so a 15–60 minute interval is a sensible default. More on the feed itself is in our Substack RSS guide.
IFTTT's Substack service adds two triggers on top of RSS: "New post by user" and "New note by user", for writers you follow (IFTTT). It has no actions, so IFTTT can't post or add subscribers either.
Can I schedule Substack Notes with Buffer or Typefully?
Yes. This is the one official write path for third-party tools. Buffer's help article says Notes "can be created, scheduled, and measured through Buffer's API and MCP server", and the feature is on every plan, including Free. The limits: top-level Notes only, with no replies, restacks or threads. A Note can carry up to 6 images or GIFs, or a link, or a video, but not a mix.
If you want an agent or script to post Notes, Buffer's API is the sanctioned route. It beats any tool that asks for your Substack password or cookie. Long-form posts still go through Substack's editor.
Can I track conversions with GA4, Tag Manager and the Meta pixel?
Yes, for anonymous conversions. In Settings → Analytics you can paste a GA4 Measurement ID, a GTM container ID, a Meta pixel ID, an X pixel ID and a Parse.ly ID. Substack then "automatically loads that tool on your publication's pages so it can count visitors and the actions they take such as subscribing" (Substack help).
What you get: visits, traffic sources, signup and paid-subscribe events, and ad attribution. What you don't get: the subscriber's email in your ad platform or CRM. Writers notice this. One said "Substack shares very little information with its facebook pixel." (r/Substack, July 2026). Another wrote "I had to create a second Facebook pixel dedicated just to sub stack" (same thread). If you add non-Google tags inside your GTM container, check in GTM's Preview mode that they actually fire before you rely on them. Our walkthrough of the dashboard and GA4 setup is in Substack analytics explained.
Can I sync Substack subscribers to Kit, a CRM or Google Sheets?
Not automatically through an official API. The supported path is manual: export a CSV from the Subscribers page, then import it into the other tool. Before you sync, check consent. People who subscribed on Substack opted in to your Substack, and a commenter on r/Substack put it bluntly: "You may want to consider certain anti-spam laws because those people didn't opt in to your site. They opted in to Substack."
Going the other way, from a form or CRM into Substack, needs care too. Substack reviews imports and can deny lists that weren't opted in. See how to add subscribers to Substack.
For data you can query, Substack has two read-only official surfaces as of October 2026:
- The official MCP server gives AI assistants "read-only access to publication data such as dashboard metrics, traffic data, and publication settings" for Bestseller admins (help).
- A key-based Publisher API (read-only posts, post stats and subscriber counts) appears for some publications "if enabled". It isn't publicly documented, so check your own dashboard settings.
What doesn't work, and why?
| Approach | Why it fails or isn't allowed |
|---|---|
| Zapier/Make "Substack" actions | No app exists (see above) |
| Server-side scripts posting to Substack | Developers report 403s: "call it from node or curl and it 403s no matter what cookies you send." (r/automation) |
| Cookie-replay tools and hosted browsers signed in as you | The Terms of Use prohibit "allowing someone else to log into Substack as you" and processes that run "while you are not logged into Substack" |
| Scraping other publications | The Terms prohibit anything that "Crawls," "scrapes," or "spiders" any part of Substack |
| Webhooks for new subscribers | Not offered |
| New-subscriber notification emails as a trigger | Writers report these stopped including the subscriber's address around March 2026 (r/Substack, GenAI Unplugged), so email-parser zaps broke |
Some integrators refuse to build on the grey routes. A social scheduler closed its Substack request with: "We are not going to build this, because Substack still has no write API." (Zernio feature board).
So what should I use?
- Announce posts elsewhere: RSS plus Zapier, Make or n8n.
- Schedule Notes: Buffer or Typefully.
- Measure ads: the Meta or X pixel and GA4 in Settings → Analytics.
- Get your data into another tool: the CSV and zip exports. See how to back up your Substack.
- Ask an AI about your stats: the official MCP if you're a Bestseller. Otherwise, an export.
Our read-only Posts & Archive API and website embeds with publish webhooks work from your feed and your own export, and they don't use your Substack login. Get access on either page or email hello@newsletterapi.io, and see /mcp for the agent version.
Questions people ask
- Is there a Substack Zapier integration?
- No. On 2026-10-21 zapier.com/apps/substack/integrations returned 404. Zapier only lists apps whose builders own the API or have permission to use it, and Substack has no public write API. You can still use Zapier's RSS trigger on your publication's /feed URL.
- Does Substack have webhooks?
- No. Substack's help centre does not describe any webhook setting as of October 2026. For events, use the GA4, Tag Manager or pixel fields in Settings → Analytics (anonymous conversions), or compare two subscriber exports.
- Can I post to Substack automatically?
- Notes, yes, through Buffer or Typefully, which Substack has partnered with. Long-form posts, no: there is no public publishing API, and tools that replay your login cookie conflict with Substack's Terms of Use.
- Is there an n8n node for Substack?
- Not an official one; n8n.io/integrations/substack returned 404 on 2026-10-21. A community node exists, but it uses your session cookie, and n8n forum users report 403 errors when creating Notes with it.
