The problem: “I need a newsletter platform whose API can add subscribers and send webhooks, and Substack's can't.”

Short answer

As of October 2026, beehiiv, Kit, Ghost, Buttondown, Mailchimp and MailerLite all offer self-serve APIs that can create subscribers, and each has webhooks, though beehiiv and Ghost put webhooks on paid plans. Substack is the outlier: its official surfaces are read-only (a gated Publisher API and a Bestseller-only MCP), with no webhooks and no subscriber-create endpoint.

If you're choosing a newsletter platform and you care about automation, the API matters more than the editor. Can you add a subscriber from your own form? Get a webhook when someone upgrades? Let an AI agent draft an issue? This page compares seven platforms on exactly those questions, using each vendor's own docs and pricing pages as read on October 21, 2026.

newsletterapi is an independent project focused on Substack writers. We make a read-only posts API and MCP server, and we have no relationship with any platform below.

The problem

You want your newsletter to plug into the rest of your stack: forms and lead ads in, CRM and ad-platform events out, an agent on top. On Substack that's where the trouble starts. A publisher who moved a large newsletter off Substack listed the reasons as "No API, no webhooks, no Zapier integration, no SSO" (LinkedIn). Another writer who switched to beehiiv described Substack as "Closed - no API, so its harder to build creative automations" (LinkedIn).

In our review of public Reddit, X, Hacker News and GitHub posts, October 2026, 23 distinct sources wanted to add subscribers to Substack from forms, ads or Stripe, and 19 wanted subscriber events sent out to Kit, a CRM or Meta. On a Reddit wishlist thread one writer asked simply for "API integration like beehiiv & kit, that will be great". If you're staying on Substack, see Substack webhooks, Facebook lead ads to Substack and syncing Substack subscribers to Kit or HubSpot. If you're choosing a platform, the comparison below is for you. More reader problems are on /problems.

Which newsletter platforms have an API that can add subscribers?

All seven have something. The difference is what the API can do and which plan unlocks it.

Platform Public API Create subscribers Publish or send Webhooks Plan gating (as published) MCP
Substack Read-only Publisher API, where enabled; Developer API for profile lookups No No (Notes via Buffer or Typefully) No Publisher API only where enabled Official, read-only, Bestseller admins
beehiiv REST API Yes Create-post endpoint in the API reference Yes API on Free (no Send API); webhooks from Lite Official; read-only on Free, read/write from Lite
Kit REST API v4 Yes Broadcasts Yes API listed on all plans Official, on paid plans
Ghost Content API (read) and Admin API (read/write) Yes (Admin API) Yes (Admin API) Yes Admin API and webhooks from Publisher Community servers
Buttondown Full REST Yes Yes Yes, HMAC-signed Not stated on pricing Community servers
Mailchimp Marketing API Yes Campaigns Yes Not stated First-party MCP for Transactional only, per a September 2026 review
MailerLite REST API Yes Campaigns Yes Not stated Official

Why can't Substack's API do what I need?

Less than the others, and only reading. As of October 2026 Substack has:

  • A Publisher API at publisher-api.substack.com, read-only and keyed per publication. According to the open-source substack-publisher-mcp wrapper, it lists posts, returns per-post stats, daily subscriber counts by type, and looks up a single subscriber by email. The option "may not be enabled for your publication yet."
  • An official MCP server that is read-only and, per Substack's help article, requires you to be an Admin of a Bestseller publication.
  • A Developer API that looks up public profiles by LinkedIn handle, by application.

There are no webhooks and no endpoint to add subscribers or publish posts. Notes can be scheduled through Buffer and Typefully. The full map, including RSS, exports and the risks of unofficial libraries, is in does Substack have an API.

Can the beehiiv API add subscribers and send webhooks?

beehiiv's developer docs (index) include endpoints to create a subscription, bulk-create subscriptions, create and list posts, and create webhooks. On beehiiv's pricing page, as read on October 21, 2026:

  • The API is listed on the free plan, excluding the Send API.
  • Webhooks start on Lite ($49 a month billed annually, $59 monthly) with three webhooks, and are unlimited on Pro.
  • The beehiiv MCP is read-only on Free and read/write from Lite.

beehiiv is the platform most open to agents: its hosted MCP is covered in newsletter MCP servers compared.

Can the Kit API add subscribers and send broadcasts?

Kit's API v4 lets you "manage your email list through tags and custom fields" and "create and send broadcasts to your subscribers", with bulk requests and async processing. Kit's pricing lists the API on all plans, including the free plan for up to 10,000 subscribers.

Kit also runs an official Kit MCP for creators, "available on all paid Kit plans". It authenticates with OAuth and can read and write subscribers, tags, segments and broadcasts; Kit says destructive or external actions such as sending broadcasts "always require explicit user confirmation."

Can the Ghost API manage members and posts?

Ghost has two APIs. The Content API is read-only for published content. The Admin API can browse, read, edit, add, copy and delete posts and pages, browse, read, edit and add members, and add, edit and delete webhooks. Integrations authenticate with an Admin API key that signs short-lived tokens, so it belongs on a server, not in a browser.

Ghost webhooks include member.added, member.edited, member.deleted, post.published and many more. On Ghost(Pro) pricing the Content API is on all plans, while the Admin API and webhooks start on Publisher ($29 a month) and are not on Starter. Self-hosted Ghost has no plan gating.

Does Buttondown have a full API?

Buttondown's API introduction says it covers every primitive, letting you "retrieve, create, modify, and delete" them, so you can manage your list and send newsletters from code. It authenticates with an API key. Buttondown webhooks include subscriber.created, subscriber.confirmed and subscriber.unsubscribed, with HMAC signing. The pricing page doesn't state an API tier.

Can the Mailchimp API add contacts and send campaigns?

The Mailchimp Marketing API imports and exports contacts, manages tags, sends app events that can trigger automations, runs batch requests, and supports OAuth 2 so apps can act on users' accounts. Its reference index includes "Add member to list", "Add campaign", "Schedule campaign" and "Send campaign". Its webhooks guide covers subscribe and unsubscribe events, and the app lets you pick other update types.

On agents: a September 2026 review found that Mailchimp's first-party MCP server covers Mandrill, its transactional product, and that the Marketing API "has no official server at all", leaving community-built options.

Can the MailerLite API add subscribers and send campaigns?

MailerLite's API lets you "List, create, update, and delete subscribers, manage their groups, and inspect engagement stats", with sections for campaigns, automations, segments, forms and webhooks. The campaigns API can create a campaign and schedule it or send it immediately. It uses bearer API keys and allows 120 requests per minute. MailerLite webhooks include subscriber.created, subscriber.unsubscribed, subscriber.bounced and campaign.sent.

MailerLite also runs an official MCP server at mcp.mailerlite.com/mcp, with setup steps for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code and Gemini CLI. Its tools include reads such as get_subscriber and writes such as create_campaign and schedule_campaign.

Which platform should I pick if I need an API?

If you need… Look at
Subscriber webhooks into a CRM Buttondown, MailerLite, Kit, Mailchimp; beehiiv from Lite; Ghost from Publisher
Add subscribers from your own forms or lead ads Any of them except Substack
An AI agent that can draft and schedule beehiiv (Lite and up), Kit (paid plans), MailerLite
An API on a free plan beehiiv, Kit (listed on all plans)
Self-hosting and full control Ghost
To stay on Substack Publisher API if enabled, official MCP if you're a Bestseller, exports and RSS otherwise

If you're staying on Substack, the gap is real: no webhooks, no subscriber create, no post write. Our posts API and MCP for Substack writers cover the read side (your archive as JSON, an agent-ready MCP) without your password. To get access, email hello@newsletterapi.io or use the form on the pricing page.

Questions people ask

Which newsletter platform has the best API?
It depends on the job. Buttondown and MailerLite document full read/write REST APIs with subscriber webhooks; Kit's v4 API covers subscribers, tags and broadcasts; Ghost's Admin API covers posts and members from its Publisher plan. Substack has no comparable public API.
Does beehiiv's API work on the free plan?
beehiiv's pricing page lists the API on the free plan, excluding the Send API. Webhooks start on Lite (three webhooks) and are unlimited on Pro.
Does Substack have webhooks?
No, not as of October 2026. Substack's help centre has no webhook setting, and there is no Substack app on Zapier.
Which newsletter platforms have an official MCP server?
beehiiv, Kit and MailerLite publish first-party MCP servers. Substack's official MCP is read-only and limited to Bestseller admins. For Ghost, Buttondown and Mailchimp's marketing product we found community servers rather than first-party ones.
